AARON TOOK THE revelation that she had witnessed Nancy Oliver’s murder much better than Simone expected. He sat behind his desk, while Margaret sat in the chair beside Simone and Kate stood back by the office door. Even with her back to the young woman, Simone could feel her hanging on every word.

“I don’t know what to say,” Aaron said in a voice more shocked than angry.

“I realize that I promised not to keep anything else from you, but I only told Sheriff Webb last night. It was the first time I’d ever spoken about what I saw to anyone except my mother.”

“Oh, honey. We understand. It must have been awful for you,” Margaret answered, patting Simone’s back sympathetically.

“I think it would be best if I took over reporting on the Holly Moyer murder and the Card Killer anniversary piece,” Aaron said.

“No!” Simone cried out. “Aaron, you can’t. I can still write this story.”

Aaron shook his head. “Your objectivity...”

Simone slid to the end of the chair she was sitting in. Margaret pulled her hand back onto her lap.

“I can still be objective. What I saw all those years ago motivates me, yes, but that is useful. I will not stop until I get to the bottom of this crime.”

Aaron snorted. “That is exactly what I’m afraid of. Your apartment has been broken into and you said you received a text you think could be from the killer. I have to consider your safety.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. I made a deal with Sheriff Webb. He has agreed to work together and to give me an exclusive interview after he’s caught the killer in exchange for me staying at Erika West’s B and B for a few nights. And you know that property is well protected.”

Aaron’s brow furrowed. “That doesn’t seem like much of a deal for the sheriff.”

Margaret coughed conspicuously. Simone shared a look with Aaron’s wife. Her pointed gaze was enough to let Simone know that her relationship with Lance had not gone as unnoticed as she’d thought. She had to wonder how many others in town suspected something was going on between them.

“Be that as it may, it is a good deal for us. Simone has an inside track on the case, and she will be with the sheriff, so that should allay any safety concerns.”

“And I could help.” Kate stepped forward. “With research and fact-checking anything that might raise concerns about Simone’s objectivity. Even help with the writing. For a byline of course.”

Since she had already pegged Kate as smart and ambitious, Simone wasn’t surprised to see the young reporter jump on the opportunity for her first byline at the Weekly. She actually admired it. She’d acted similarly when she was a young, hungry new reporter trying to break into the business.

She smiled and nodded Kate’s way to let her know she was on board.

Aaron didn’t look convinced, but he conceded. “But I need to know every single move you are making on this.
